What is Zakat?
The Third Pillar
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on wealth that meets the minimum threshold (Nisab) and has been held for one lunar year.
The Nisab Threshold
You only pay Zakat if your net wealth exceeds the Nisab — equivalent to the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. Most scholars recommend using the silver standard as it includes more people in the obligation of giving.
Spiritual Purpose
"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase." — Qur'an 9:103. Zakat purifies wealth, combats greed, and supports those in need.
