Structure & Organization
The Qur'an is not organized like a conventional book. Understanding its structure helps you navigate it more effectively.
Chapters (Surahs)
114 surahs, arranged roughly by length (longest to shortest), not chronologically.
Verses (Ayat)
Over 6,200 verses covering law, theology, stories, ethics, and spirituality.
Parts (Juz')
Divided into 30 equal parts to facilitate reading the entire Qur'an in one month.
Revelation Period
Revealed over 23 years—13 in Mecca (faith, stories) and 10 in Medina (law, community).
How the Qur'an Was Revealed
The Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) over 23 years.
First Revelation
The word "Iqra" (Read!) in the Cave of Hira marked the beginning. Surah Al-Alaq (96:1-5) was the first passage revealed.
Gradual Revelation
Verses were revealed in response to events, questions, and the needs of the growing community—making the Qur'an a living, contextual guide.
Preservation
Companions memorized and wrote down every verse. The Qur'an is the only religious scripture with an unbroken chain of mass memorization (Tawatur) spanning 14 centuries.
Major Themes of the Qur'an
Despite covering many topics, the Qur'an's themes are deeply interconnected and always circle back to the core message of Tawhid.
Tafsir: Understanding the Qur'an
Tafsir is the science of Qur'anic interpretation. It requires mastery of Arabic, Hadith, history, and theology. Here are the major works:
| Scholar | Approach | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Ibn Kathir | Tafsir bil-Ma'thur | Interprets the Qur'an using other verses, Hadith, and companion reports. Most popular classical tafsir. |
| Al-Qurtubi | Fiqh-focused | Extracts legal rulings from verses. Essential for scholars of Islamic law. |
| Al-Tabari | Comprehensive | Massive encyclopedic work recording multiple opinions from the earliest scholars. |
| Ibn Ashur | Modern linguistic | Combines classical Arabic analysis with modern context. A 20th-century masterpiece. |
