The Importance of Naming in Islam
A Right of the Child
The Prophet ﷺ said: "On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so make your names good." (Abu Dawud). Choosing a meaningful name is one of the first rights a child has over their parents.
Guidelines
The best names are those that express servitude to Allah (e.g., Abdullah = Servant of God) or carry positive meanings. Names of prophets, companions, and righteous people are encouraged. Names with negative or arrogant meanings should be avoided.
