Tawhid: The Absolute Oneness of God
Tawhid is the single most important concept in Islam. It is not merely saying "God is one"—it is an entire worldview that redefines a person's relationship with the universe.
| Category | Meaning | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah | Oneness of Lordship | God alone creates, sustains, and governs the universe. |
| Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah | Oneness of Worship | All worship—prayer, supplication, sacrifice—is directed to God alone. |
| Tawhid al-Asma wa's-Sifat | Oneness of Names & Attributes | God's attributes (mercy, power, knowledge) are unique and incomparable. |
The Six Articles of Faith
While the Five Pillars define what a Muslim does, the Six Articles define what a Muslim believes. These are non-negotiable tenets.
Islam, Iman & Ihsan: Three Dimensions
The famous Hadith of Jibreel outlines three concentric circles of the faith, each deeper than the last.
| Aspect | Islam | Iman | Ihsan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition | Outward submission; the five pillars | Inner conviction; the six articles of faith | Excellence in worship; spiritual awareness |
| Focus | Actions and practice | Heart and belief | Soul and sincerity |
| Hadith of Jibreel | "Islam is to testify, pray, give zakat, fast, and perform Hajj." | "Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, books, messengers, the Last Day, and qadar." | "Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him; if you cannot see Him, He sees you." |
What Strengthens & Weakens Iman
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Iman increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience." Faith is not a static state—it fluctuates.

Warning Signs
Qadar: Understanding God's Plan
Belief in Qadar is often the most misunderstood article of faith. It does not mean fatalism.
Knowledge
Allah knows everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen.
Writing
Everything is recorded in the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz).
Will
Nothing happens except by Allah's permission.
Creation
Allah is the Creator of all things, including our actions—but He gave us free will to choose.
Key Insight: Islam strikes a balance—you are responsible for your choices, but you trust that God's overarching plan is wise and just, even when you don't understand it.
Iman is a journey, not a destination. The greatest scholars of Islam described themselves as perpetual students of faith, always seeking to deepen their understanding and connection with God.
